Cougs ink five recruits

Meagan Cormier wasn't quite sure what to expect last summer when she joined the Edmonton Angels of the Alberta Major Soccer League. She learned very quickly.
"It was way faster-paced," said Cormier. "I was playing against people that were 25 years old and half of them played on the national team. It was five teams bigger than what I'm used to playing in. After that, I was a lot quicker and fitter and playing harder passes."
That experience is bound to help the 18-year-old Campbell Collegiate student as she embarks on the next stage of her soccer career. Cormier is one of three Saskatchewan recruits set to join the University of Regina Cougars in the fall. Also committing to the U of R are Regina's Keisha Riddell and Moose Jaw's Jessica Meyer.
The Cougars have also received commitments from Calgary's Adrianna Bonutti and Pitt Meadows, B.C., product Madalina Sonnea.
Cougars head coach Bob Maltman is particularly excited to see what kind of chemistry develops between Cormier and Bonutti after seeing the forwards play together during an offseason ID camp.
"They showed some really good things, especially having never met each other and playing together for an hour," said Maltman.
There's already some chemistry between Cormier and Meyer, who are to play on the back end together during the Canada Games this summer in Prince Edward Island. The two have played together on provincial teams since they were 12 and were members of the RE United club team over the winter.
"We've been playing together forever so it's nice to know someone else you're coming in with," said Meyer.
The Cougars plan to play host to a preseason tournament beginning Aug. 28 and open the regular season on the road against the Calgary Dinos and Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sept. 12 and 13.
