Three players named all-stars

Three members of the University of Regina Rams -- slotback Jordan Sisco, defensive tackle Bjorn Person and kicker Perri Scarcelli -- are on the 2009 Canada West football all-star team.

In that, there is a measure of solace, considering that the Rams' season ended Saturday with a 53-23 first-round playoff loss to the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

"It's exciting to get the recognition but, in the end, it still sucks that it had to end the way it did,'' Sisco said.

Sisco, a fourth-year Ram who moved from wide receiver to slotback in 2009, led the conference with 52 receptions in eight games. He had 700 receiving yards and two touchdown catches, and added three more majors (two on passes and one on the ground) during the playoff game against Saskatoon.

The former Riffel Royals star, who has one year of CIS eligibility remaining, is only 33 regular-season receptions shy of surpassing ex-Rams slotback Chad Goldie as Canada West's all-time leader in receptions. But will Sisco get that opportunity? He has been touted as first-round material for the 2010 CFL draft.

"People always say that I've probably played my last game as a Ram, but I don't look at it that way,'' said Sisco, a second-time all-star. "If I don't come back, I don't come back. If I do come back, I'll take advantage of the year I have left and work my butt off.''

Person and Scarcelli both made the most of their fifth seasons of Canada West football, as evidenced by their all-star selections.

"I'm very excited,'' said Person, who had a career-high 15 1/2 total tackles for the Rams during the regular season. "I'm finally getting recognized for all the hard work I've put into football. It's nice to get noticed.''

That said, Person wishes the fifth year could have lasted a few weeks longer.

"I really wanted to go on a Vanier Cup run,'' the 6-foot-3, 280-pounder said. "But when a season doesn't go as well as it should have, you still have to take the positives out of it. My goal is to pursue the next level of football and this is a step in the right direction.''

Scarcelli has similar aspirations following a stellar graduating season, in which he connected on 20 of 23 field-goal attempts. With 56 field goals as a Ram, he is third in Canada West history.

"Being an all-star was one my goals coming into the season and I'm glad to accomplish it in my last year,'' said Scarcelli, who hails from Calgary.

"I'm hoping to get a look (in the CFL) and hopefully at least get into a training camp and start a career and continue playing football.''
