University of Regina wrestlers Connor Malloy and Jasmine Slinn both wrestled over the weekend at the 2010 FILA Junior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Malloy, wrestling at 74 kilograms, opened the tournament with a 2-1, 1-0 victory over Italy’s Carmelo Lumia in the Round of 32. Malloy’s victory set up a Round of 16 match with Bulgaria’s Miroslav Kirov, which he lost by a score of 3-1, 1-0. Kirov was bounced in the quarterfinals, eliminating Malloy from further competition.

Wrestling at 48 kilograms, Slinn was matched up against Japan’s Mika Naganuma in the Round of 32. Slinn battled to a 1-1 draw in the second round after dropping the first by a 1-0 count, but was defeated 5-1 in the third round to lose the match. Naganuma was eliminated in the following round, ending Slinn’s chances of wrestling in the repechage.

Malloy and Slinn, who are entering their third year of eligibility with the Cougars, were both ranked 12th in their respective weight classes by FILA’s individual ranking system.
