The University of Regina's women's soccer team kicked off the 2010 non-conference schedule at the Alberta Cup, a four-team tournament hosted by Mount Royal University in Calgary.
The Cougars opened up the tournament with a 4-1 loss to Mount Royal on Friday. Mount Royal scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead, but
Tegan Koroluk cut the deficit to just one goal with a strike ten minutes into the second. Mount Royal had two quick responses, scoring twice in the span of two minutes to put the match out of reach.
In Saturday's game, the Cougars dressed mostly first-year players in a 3-1 loss to the Concordia University College of Alberta, the defending CCAA champions. Regina's lone goal was scored by Melanie King, a first-year player out of Dr. Martin LeBoldus HS. Zoe Threlfall, playing in her hometown of Calgary, was credited with the assist on King's goal.
Sunday saw the Cougars come up with a 1-1 draw against UBC Okanagan, a school playing in its last season in the BCCAA before moving to Canada West beginning in 2011.
Kimbi Wiebe gave Regina a 1-0 lead midway through the second half, but the Heat scored off a corner in the waning moments of the match to come up with the draw.
The Cougars will host a non-conference tournament next weekend at the U of R Field. They'll square off with the Manitoba Bisons on Friday at 6:45 p.m. and will play again on Saturday against Medicine Hat College at 3:45 p.m.
The team will open up the conference schedule at home against Canada West foes Fraser Valley and Victoria on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. Both games will kick off at noon at the U of R Field.
