The Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that current U of R women’s volleyball coach
Melanie Sanford has been included as a member of its 2010 induction class.
Sanford, who was inducted in the athletes’ category, helped the University of Saskatchewan’s women’s volleyball team to three consecutive CIAU titles in 1979, 1980, and 1981. She was a two-time All-Canadian and a three-time Canada West first-team all-star.
She went on to play with the national senior team for three seasons and also played three years professionally in Japan and Italy. Prior to her time at the U of S, she played for Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon and won a provincial championship in her final year of high school.
Sanford, who guided the U of R to an appearance in the CIS Championship last season, is entering her ninth year as the head coach of the Cougars. With 80 conference wins and six postseason victories, she stands as the winningest coach in program history.
Sanford and the other inductees will be honoured at a ceremony at TCU Place in Saskatoon on Nov. 6.
