Tait Nystuen set a new Saskatchewan junior-age record in the 400-metre hurdles over the weekend, winning the event with a time of 53.53 seconds at the Calgary Spring Challenge at Glenmore Athletic Park.
Nystuen broke a record held by Max Muzzolini, who set the mark at 54 seconds flat as a 19-year-old back in 1987. Nystuen’s time was only 0.19 seconds short of automatically qualifying him for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, N.B.
Nystuen recently completed his first season of eligibility with the Cougars, helping the team to its first ever Canada West championship and competing in the CIS Championships in both the 600-metre run and the 4x400-metre relay.
Nystuen will also have chances to qualify for the world juniors at the Junior Trials in Prince Albert on June 11 and 12, CALTAF in Calgary the following weekend, and at the World Junior Track & Field Trials in Moncton in early July.
