Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Tuesday the reception of bid proposals from 18 universities to host 22 national championships over the next five years.
The proposals include bids for four championships by the University of Regina. The Cougars have submitted bids for the 2012 CIS Women’s Basketball Championship, the 2013 and 2014 CIS Men’s Hockey Championships, and the 2014 CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship.
“CIS national championships are a showcase of Canada’s best student-athletes,” University of Regina athletic director Dick White said. “The University of Regina is excited about the opportunity to bring these events to Regina and highlight our programs.”
The U of R has hosted the women’s basketball national tournament on two occasions, most recently in 2009 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. The Cougars also played host to the national championship in 1979.
The Cougars are hoping to return the men’s hockey national championship to Regina for the first time since 1980, when they hosted the CIAU tournament at the Agridome. The U of R has never hosted a women’s volleyball national tournament before.
The University of Regina has also played host to four other national championships in its history, including the 2002 and 2003 CIS Women’s Hockey Championships and the 1982 and 1991 CIAU Wrestling Championships.
The successful bids will be announced after the CIS Selection Committee meets during the week of June 21-25.
