The University of Regina's football team returns to the field this weekend, as the Rams will host their 2010 Spring Camp beginning on Friday at the U of R Field.

95 players will participate in the camp, including 46 returning from the Rams' 2009 roster. Offensive players and kickers will wear white jerseys, while defenders will wear green.

Two-a-day practices will start Friday, with on-field activities scheduled for 3 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the camp will start with a session at 9 a.m. and again at 3 p.m. The camp will finish off with a controlled scrimmage on Sunday at 11 a.m.

“This weekend is a culmination of the efforts by our present players in terms of offseason training,” Rams head coach Frank McCrystal. “It’s also our first chance to work with the newcomers. It’ll be great to get back on the field this weekend.”

The list of offensive returners is highlighted by fourth-year quarterback Marc Mueller, who led Canada West with 2308 passing yards last season. Slotback Brenden Owens and wide receiver Mark McConkey, who both had over 450 receiving yards last season, will be Mueller’s top targets this season if Jordan Sisco makes the jump to the professional ranks.

Bruce Anderson, who registered 46½ tackles last season, is the lone starting linebacker returning this season. The Rams will be experienced in the secondary, as all five starters from last season – Steve Famulak, Mike Kerr, Kirby Kezama, Jeff Lukomski, and Matt Yausie – will return. Ryan Wellman, who had 19½ tackles and two sacks last season as a rookie, is the team’s top returning defensive lineman.

Of the 49 newcomers, 36 are straight out of high school. 20 of those are from Regina high schools, while 14 come from other schools in Saskatchewan and two are attending out-of-province schools. Nine players are attending camp after spending the 2009 season playing junior football, including four that played for the Regina Thunder.

Left guard Devin Hillier and slotback Jason Price, who were both injured last season, are still recovering and will not participate this weekend. Sisco – who is attending the Indianapolis Colts’ rookie camp this weekend – and right tackle John Hashem will also miss camp.
