University of Regina athletic director Dick White announced Thursday that Bruce McCannel has been named the permanent head coach of the school’s track & field and cross country programs.

McCannel, who has held the position on an interim basis since last May, guided the Cougars to two conference championships in his first season. The men’s cross country team won the Canada West championship in November, while the men’s track & field team won the conference title in February.

“I am confident that Bruce can continue to move the program in a positive direction,” White said. “Bruce’s leadership contributed to our cross country and track & field championships last season, and I look forward to more success in the very near future.”

Prior to being named interim head coach last year, McCannel volunteered as a jumps coach for three seasons with the Cougars while working as an intergovernmental analyst for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Finance.

McCannel was also a prolific athlete for the U of R, winning nine Canada West medals and four CIS medals during his career.
