The University of Regina’s
Brittany Read and
Joanna Zalesiak were both named Canada West all-stars on Wednesday as the conference announced its major individual award winners and all-star teams.
Read, who averaged 14.4 points and a Canada West-leading 9.8 rebounds per game, was named a first-team all-star. The third-year post also accounted for over half of the team’s blocked shots and was second on the Cougars with a free throw percentage of 75.5%.
“Brittany stepped into a featured role for our team this year and has been our go-to scorer all season long,” Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. “I’m extremely proud of her, as this award reflects the hard work she put in over the summer and the outstanding season she’s had so far.”
In her first season in a U of R uniform, Zalesiak was named a conference second-team all-star. She finished second on the team in both points per game (14.3) and rebounds per game (6.3) and led the Cougars with 87 assists.
“Jo has been a difference maker for our team this year,” Taylor said. “Her joining our program has allowed us to stay in the top five nationally. She has brought tremendous experience and athleticism to our team and has given us added perimeter scoring.”
The Cougars will play in the Canada West Final Four this weekend in Burnaby, B.C. Regina will meet Alberta in the semifinals on Friday, then will play either host Simon Fraser or Saskatchewan on Saturday. The top three teams at the Final Four will advance to the 2010 CIS Championship in Hamilton, Ont.
