Game Summary

The University of Regina’s men’s hockey team peppered Manitoba goalie Steve Christie with 40 shots, but was defeated 3-2 by the Bisons on Saturday night at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Christie made 38 saves to secure the win for the No. 8-ranked Bisons, who improve to 14-8-2 with the win.

The Bisons scored the only goal of the opening period when Tyler Dittmer scored a power play marker late in the frame.

Craig Cuthbert’s team-leading eighth goal of the season tied up the game at one near the nine-minute mark of the second. Ryan Sawka and Mark Nelson both assisted on Cuthbert’s power play goal, but Ian Duval restored the Bisons’ one-goal lead just over two minutes later. The Cougars outshot Manitoba by a 15-4 margin in the second.

Blair Macaulay scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the third, giving Manitoba a 3-1 lead. Nelson cut the lead to one with Regina’s second power play goal of the game just two minutes after Macaulay’s goal, but the Bisons were able to hold onto the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Brant Hilton made 24 saves in the loss for the Cougars, who fall to 9-12-1.

Regina will be back in action next weekend with a pair of road games at Lethbridge.
