Jasmine Slinn led the University of Regina’s women’s wrestling team with a third-place finish at 48 kilograms at the Women’s College Wrestling Association Championships on Saturday in Marshall, Mo.
Slinn won her quarterfinal match against Menlo College’s Sherylyn Sabada, but dropped down to the consolation bracket after a loss in the semifinals. She reeled off consecutive victories over Britney Heatherly (Missouri Valley College) and Anna Cummings of King College to end up in third place.
Lisa McKibben finished in fifth place at 67 kilograms after defeating King College’s Shanna Young. McKibben ended up winning three of her five matches, as the second-year wrestler also defeated opponents from both Missouri Valley College and Menlo College.
Andrea Nillson, who wrestled at 72 kilograms, was the only other member of the U of R to compete. She defeated Brittany Gadd (University of the Cumberlands) in the Round of 16, but was beaten in the quarterfinals and lost her match in the consolation bracket.
The Cougars will now focus on preparations for the Canada West Championships, scheduled for Feb. 19 and 20 in Calgary.
