The University of Regina’s men’s track & field team won its first conference championship on Saturday at the 2010 Canada West Track & Field Championships in Edmonton.
The Cougars led after the first day of competition and kept the momentum going into Saturday, ending up with 101.5 team points to finish 12.5 ahead of second-place Saskatchewan.
“We really deserved to win this championship,” Cougars head coach
Bruce McCannel said. “We had a really good day yesterday and finished ahead of where we were hoping to be, and today the triple jumpers started us off well and we kept it going from there.”
Jeremy Eckert was the top individual point producer for the Cougars, finishing first in the high jump and second in the pentathlon to score 15 team points.
Les Andersen was kept busy all weekend for Regina, ending up with 13 team points after finishing second in the triple jump, third in the 60-metre hurdles, fourth in the 60-metre dash, and sixth in the long jump.
Andersen was also a member of the 4x200-metre and 4x400-metre relay teams. The 4x200 team finished in first place to score ten team points, while the 4x400 team scored eight team points with a third-place finish.
Justin Baker also had an impressive weekend for the Cougars, winning the 60-metre hurdles and finishing fourth in the pentathlon.
Kelly Wiebe finished in first place in the 3000-metre run, while
Chris Pickering was second in the shot put and fourth in the weight throw.
The women’s team finished in fifth place with 38.5 team points. First-place finishes were recorded by
Nicole Breker (long jump) and
Robyn Bauck (triple jump), while
Amanda Ruller finished in second place in the 60-metre dash.
Breker also recorded third-place finishes in both the 60-metre hurdles and the triple jump. She scored a total of 15 team points for the Cougars.
The Cougars will now prepare for the CIS Championships, which will be held in Windsor, Ont. from March 11 to 13.
