Cougars place third at Canada West meet

The University of Regina’s women’s wrestling team finished in third place on Friday at the 2010 Canada West Wrestling Championships.

Regina was led by a quartet of silver medalists, including Hajar Ashtiani (48 kg), Jasmine Slinn (51 kg), Meghan King (59 kg), and Lisa McKibben (67 kg).

The Cougars finished with 23 team points, 11 behind second-place Calgary and four ahead of fourth-place Alberta. Simon Fraser edged the Dinos for the team title, recording a total of 35 team points.

Ashtiani, King, McKibben, Slinn, and Jillian Durant – who finished in third place at 63 kilograms – will all go on to represent the U of R at the CIS Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Calgary on March 5 and 6.

The Canada West men’s wrestling championship will be decided on Saturday in Calgary.
