The University of Regina’s track & field teams added one more CIS qualifier to their ranks and set two new school records over the weekend at the Bison Classic at the Max Bell Centre in Winnipeg.

Nicole Breker recorded a jump of 11.70 metres in the triple jump, exceeding the CIS standard by 25 centimetres and finishing second in the event. Breker, who will participate in the triple jump at the national championships for the third consecutive season, also finished in third place in the 60-metre hurdles (9.07 s).

Amanda Ruller recorded a time of 7.65 seconds in the 60-metre dash, breaking her own U of R record. Ruller’s time, which earned her a second-place finish in the event, was just four-hundredths of a second away from a national standard and was the fifth fastest time recorded by a CIS athlete this season.

First-place finishes were recorded by Shalane Haselhan in the high jump (1.61m), Caitlin Fowler in the shot put (12.16m), and Kirsten Ecklund in the weight throw (13.78m).

On the men’s side, Chris Pickering set a new U of R record with a toss of 15.99 metres in the weight throw. Pickering, in his second year of eligibility after transferring from the U of S, was just 16 centimetres short of hitting the CIS standard in the event.

The men’s 4x200-metre relay team placed first for the second consecutive weekend, finishing with a blazing time of 1:28.73 that fell just 0.16 seconds short of hitting a national standard.

First-place finishes were also registered by Les Andersen (60-metre hurdles; 8.57 s), Connor MacDonald (high jump; 1.95m), and David Walford in both the long jump (6.52m) and the triple jump (14.05m).

The Cougars will be back in action this weekend at the Queen City Kinsmen Indoor Classic, which will be hosted on Friday and Saturday at the Regina Fieldhouse.
