Cougars swept in three by UBC

The University of Regina’s men’s volleyball team was defeated by the UBC Thunderbirds in three sets on Saturday night in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Thunderbirds won the first two sets by identical 25-19 margins, then clinched the match with a 25-12 win in the third set.

Kyle Duperron led the UBC attack for the second consecutive night, ending up with 14 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Cary Brett hit .889 to lead all players and also registered a match-high five block assists, and setter Ryan Zwarich had 40 assists while controlling a Thunderbird offence that hit an impressive .448 for the match. Blair Bann had a match-high 12 digs for UBC.

Mathew Brooks led the Cougars with seven kills and added eight digs, while Lindsey Isaak had a team-leading nine digs.

The victory improves UBC’s record to 3-7 as the Thunderbirds move to within two wins of the final Canada West playoff spot. Regina’s conference record drops to 0-10 with the loss.

UBC will hit the road again next weekend and will face Brandon (5-3), while the Cougars will travel to Langley, B.C. for a pair of matches at Trinity Western.
