Thunderbirds take straight-sets victory over Cougars

The University of Regina’s men’s volleyball team was defeated in straight sets on Friday night by the UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West match at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Thunderbirds won 25-19 in the first set and 25-21 in both the second and the third sets to collect their second win of the season.

Kyle Duperron led the UBC attack with a match-high 14 kills on just 26 attempts, ending up with a .346 hitting percentage. Blair Bann tied for the match lead with nine digs, while Ryan Zwarich dished out 31 assists and added eight digs. Cary Brett recorded a solo block and seven block assists, and also had six kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

Jamie Wilkins led the Cougars with nine kills and hit for a .467 percentage, while Colin Finch and Drew Smith both had eight kills. Lindsey Isaak had nine digs and first-year setter Caleb Eschbach had 26 assists.

UBC improves to 2-7 with the victory. The Cougars fall to 0-9 on the season.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at the CKHS.
