The University of Regina’s men’s volleyball team returns to the court this weekend, as the Cougars will host the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars (0-8) will turn to fifth-year outside hitter
Mathew Brooks, the only University of Regina player to register at least 800 career kills since the introduction of the rally point prior to the 1999-00 season. Brooks leads the Cougars with 56 kills this season, while
Jamie Wilkins has 44.
Greg Barthel and the rest of the coaching staff thought they would see
Leon Dyck return to the lineup following the break in the schedule, but the third-year middle suffered a setback and remains out indefinitely with a knee injury.
Usually an above-average Canada West team, UBC has won just one of its first eight matches of the season and currently sits in ninth place in the conference. The Thunderbirds are led in kills by third-year outside hitter Demijan Savija, while third-year middle Joe Cordonier has a team-high .290 hitting percentage.
The teams will meet on Friday night at 8 p.m. at the CKHS following the women’s match and again on Saturday night at 6 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live at reginacougars.com.
Following this weekend, the Cougars will hit the road for a pair of matches against Trinity Western (6-2) on Jan. 15 and 16 in Langley, B.C.
