University of Regina athletic director Dick White announced Wednesday that Carla Nicholls has officially resigned from her position as the head coach of the U of R’s track & field and cross country teams.
Nicholls, who took a leave of absence from the U of R last April to take a position as a national event group coach with Athletics Canada, will continue there on a full-time basis.
“Carla’s leadership has produced some of the best student-athletes ever to wear the green and gold,” White said. “Under the direction of Carla and her coaching staff, the Cougars have developed into one of the top track programs in the CIS.”
Nicholls served as the Cougars’ head coach for seven seasons. Her time at the U of R was highlighted by a pair of second-place Canada West finishes - by the men’s team in 2004 and by the women’s team in 2009. Seven different U of R athletes were named All-Canadians during her tenure.
Bruce McCannel will continue to serve as the U of R’s interim head coach. A search for a permanent full-time coach will begin immediately.
