Duarte leads Cougars with bronze medal at Canada West Championships

Linda Duarte led the University of Regina’s swimming teams at the Canada West Championships over the weekend, recording the Cougars’ lone medal at the meet hosted in Lethbridge, Alta.

Duarte won a bronze medal in the 100-metre butterfly, as the fifth-year swimmer shaved almost three seconds off her time in the preliminaries and finished up with a time of 1:03.46 in the final. She also qualified in the ‘A’ final in the 200-metre butterfly and finished in sixth place with a time of 2:21.48.

Duarte also finished in 14th place in the 50-metre breaststroke (36.60 s) and in 16th place in the 50-metre butterfly (30.08 s).

Maggi Pettit qualified for the ‘A’ final in the 50-metre freestyle on Saturday and ended up in eighth place with a time of 27.68 seconds. Pettit also swam in the ‘B’ final in the 100-metre freestyle, placing 14th with a time of 1:00.85.

On the men’s side, rookie Robert Ennis led the Cougars with a sixth-place finish in the 100-metre butterfly (57.70 s) and a seventh-place finish in the 200-metre butterfly (2:08.82). Hector Fukushi qualified for the ‘B’ final in both the 100-metre breaststroke (16th, 1:12.37) and the 200-metre breaststroke (15th, 2:40.98).

Duarte will represent the Cougars at the CIS Championships, which will be held from Feb. 18 to 20 in Toronto.
