Justin Baker and
Jeremy Eckert both hit CIS standards for the University of Regina’s men’s track & field team on Saturday at the Golden Bear Open at the Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton.
Baker won the 60-metre hurdles with a time of 8.18 seconds, which stands as the fastest time in Canada West this season and the third fastest in the CIS. Baker’s time was .15 seconds better than the CIS standard, which clinches his third trip to the national championships in as many years as a Cougar.
Eckert, who hit the CIS standard in the high jump earlier this season, added a pentathlon standard on Saturday. He won the high jump after clearing the bar at 2.03 metres, placed second in the long jump with a score of 6.86 metres, and ended up in third place overall with a total of 3596 points.
Besides Baker’s gold in the hurdles, first-place finishes were also recorded by
Connor MacDonald in the high jump (2.05 m) and
David Walford in the triple jump (14.15 m).
The Cougars scored four third-place finishes on the women’s side, led by
Robyn Bauck in both the long jump (5.25 m) and the triple jump (11.58 m).
Caitlin Fowler finished in third place in the shot put (12.25 m), while
Chantel Labrecque was third in the weight throw (13.86 m).
The U of R’s track & field teams will have a weekend off before returning to action at the Sled Dog Meet in Saskatoon on Jan. 29 and 30.
