Swimming – Led by fifth-year butterfly specialist
Linda Duarte, the University of Regina will send four athletes to the 2010 Canada West Swimming Championships in Lethbridge. Duarte is the only U of R swimmer to have hit a national standard this season, as she recorded a time of 1:04.12 in the 100-metre fly back in late November.
Maggi Pettit will join Duarte from the women’s team, while
Hector Fukushi and rookie
Robert Ennis will represent the men’s side. The conference meet stretches from Friday to Sunday.
Women’s Basketball (CIS Ranking: No. 2) – The Cougars took care of business over the weekend, recording 74-66 and 76-50 road victories over Manitoba to improve their Prairie Division-leading record to 10-2. Losses by both Windsor and Saskatchewan also helped push the Cougars up two spots to No. 2 in this week’s CIS Top Ten. The Cougars host Brandon this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Limited edition t-shirts and toques will be available at Friday’s game in support of the “Shoot for the Cure” campaign, which will benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Men’s Basketball – The Cougars pulled out a pair of critical road victories over Manitoba on Friday and Saturday, winning 84-74 on Friday and 86-73 on Saturday. The two wins improve Regina’s record to 6-6 on the season as the Cougars sit in third place in the Prairie Division. They have an important home weekend coming up, as Brandon (6-8) will pay a visit to the CKHS for games on Friday and Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. on both nights.
Women’s Volleyball (CIS Ranking: No. 6) – The Cougars split a pair of matches with Trinity Western over the weekend in Langley, B.C. The U of R won in straight sets on Friday, but the Spartans replied with a three-set win of their own on Saturday. The Cougars, now 7-5 on the season, will host Simon Fraser (1-12) on Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.) at the CKHS.
Women’s Wrestling (CIS Ranking: No. 3) – The Cougars won the 2010 Cougar Invitational on Saturday with a total of 26 points, 11 ahead of second-place Saskatchewan.
Hajar Ashtiani (48 kg) and
Jasmine Slinn (51 kg) both registered first-place finishes for the U of R. The Cougars will host Jamestown College in a dual on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. at the CKHS, and will also send four wrestlers to the Guelph Open on Saturday.
Men’s Wrestling (CIS Ranking: No. 5) – Like their counterparts on the women’s team, the U of R’s men’s team took first place at the 2010 Cougar Invitational on Saturday. The Cougars boasted four individual champions, including
Steven Schneider (54 kg),
Gilbert Musonza (57 kg),
Kirk Ackerman (61 kg), and
Jarret Coels (72 kg). The U of R will host the Jamestown College Jimmies on Wednesday night in a dual at the CKHS.
Men’s Hockey – The Cougars scored two shorthanded goals in a 3-2 win over Saskatchewan at home on Saturday night, but lost 5-3 to the Huskies on Sunday night in Saskatoon.
Tanner Shultz had a three-point weekend for Regina, scoring the game-winning goal and recording an assist on Friday and adding a late goal on Saturday. The Cougars (6-11-1) will have a weekend off before returning to the ice on Jan. 29 and 30 against Calgary.
Track & Field (Men’s CIS Ranking: No. 6 / Women’s CIS Ranking: No. 8) – The Cougars competed at the Golden Bear Open in Edmonton on Friday and Saturday, with
Justin Baker and
Jeremy Eckert hitting CIS standards at the meet. Baker won the 60-metre hurdles with a blazing time of 8.18 seconds, while Eckert scored an impressive 3596 points in the pentathlon. The Cougars will have a weekend off before heading to Saskatoon for the Sled Dog Meet on Jan. 29 and 30.
Men’s Volleyball – The Cougars (0-12) suffered a pair of road setbacks to Trinity Western over the weekend, losing 3-0 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday. With the women’s team hosting Simon Fraser, the Cougars will enjoy a weekend off and will return to the court on Jan. 29 and 30 against Calgary.
Women’s Hockey – The Cougars (5-6-5) lost two road games to Calgary over the weekend, falling 3-2 in a shootout on Friday and dropping a 3-0 decision on Saturday. The U of R, which still sits in fourth place in the Canada West standings with 15 points, will have this weekend off before returning to action on Jan. 30 and 31 with a home-and-home series against Saskatchewan.
