The University of Regina’s men’s and women’s wrestling teams both finished in first place in the team standings at the 2010 Cougar Invitational, hosted on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The men’s team finished with 45 points, giving it a 13-point cushion over second-place Saskatchewan. The Cougars boasted four individual champions, including
Steven Schneider (54 kg),
Gilbert Musonza (57 kg),
Kirk Ackerman (61 kg), and
Jarret Coels (72 kg).
The men’s team also had four second-place finishers, as
Gaelan Malloy (65 kg), #Chad Bates (68 kg),
Connor Malloy (76 kg), and
Calvin Daum (82 kg) all won silver medals.
The women’s team won the event with a total of 26 points, while Saskatchewan finished in second place with 15.
Hajar Ashtiani (48 kg) and
Jasmine Slinn (51 kg) both placed first for the Cougars, while
Meghan King (59 kg),
Jillian Durant (63 kg), and
Lisa McKibben (67 kg) all finished in second place.
Both the men’s and the women’s team will return to the mats on Wednesday night, when they’ll host Jamestown College in a pair of duals. The women’s dual will begin at 6 p.m. and the men are slated to start at 7 p.m.
