Cougars pull away from Bisons late; earn weekend sweep

The University of Regina’s men’s basketball team got back up the .500 mark for the season after defeating the Manitoba Bisons by an 86-73 score on Saturday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.

The game was tied at 63 at the eight-minute mark of the fourth quarter, but the Cougars scored 12 consecutive points and led by double digits for the remainder of the contest.

Marek Downarowicz, Jeff Lukomski, Jordan McFarlen, and Jamal Williams all tied for the team lead with 13 points, while Sterling Nostedt chipped in with 12. Williams added 13 points for the double-double.

Sean Maxwell led Manitoba in both points (19) and rebounds (11).

The win improves Regina’s record to 6-6 on the season, as the Cougars pull even with Lethbridge for third place in the Canada West standings.

The Cougars finally return home next weekend for a pair of games against Brandon (5-8).

NOTES: Paul Schubach needs just 17 more points to hit 1000 for his career.
