Game Summary

The University of Regina’s women’s hockey team was defeated 3-2 by the Calgary Dinos in a shootout on Friday night at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.

Calgary scored on three of its four shootout attempts to secure the extra point, while the Cougars were held scoreless on their three tries.

Paige Wheeler opened the scoring for the Cougars with a goal at 6:19 of the first period, which stood until Calgary’s Elana Lovell notched a power play goal just before the eight-minute mark of the second.

Kelsie Graham restored Regina’s one-goal lead after scoring her third goal in as many games in the waning moments of the second period, but Sinead Tracey tied up the game for the Dinos at the five-minute mark of the third.

Overtime settled nothing, despite both teams being given a man advantage during the extra frame.

The Cougars move to 5-5-5 on the season and increase their lead over fifth-place UBC to four points in the Canada West standings. Calgary is now 2-13-0.

The two teams will play again on Saturday afternoon in Calgary.
