Women's wrestlers place first at Golden Bear Open

Led by first-place finishes from both Hajar Ashtiani and Meghan King, the University of Regina’s No. 3-ranked women’s wrestling team took first place at the Golden Bear Open on Saturday in Edmonton.

Ashtiani won the 48-kilogram class, while King took home top spot at 59 kilograms.

Top-three finishes were also recorded by Jasmine Slinn, who finished second at 51 kilograms, and Lisa McKibben, who placed third in the 67-kilogram class.

The Cougars finished in first place with 30 team points, four ahead of the Dinos Wrestling Club and 11 ahead of third-place Black Bears Wrestling Club.

On the men’s side, the Cougars – also ranked No. 3 in the country – finished in second place behind the University of Saskatchewan. Jimmy Levesque was the top Cougar finisher, taking second place at 96 kilograms.

Steven Schneider (55 kg), Kirk Ackerman (60 kg), and Connor Malloy (74 kg) all finished in third place for the Cougars.

The men’s and women’s wrestling teams will be back in action this weekend at the Cougar Invitational on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Matches will start at 10 a.m. and run to approximately 5 p.m.
