Saskatchewan Athletics announced its roster for the 2009 Canada Summer Games on Monday, naming nine current members of the University of Regina’s track & field teams and four U of R recruits to the squad.
The men’s roster includes
Justin Baker (pictured), who will enter his third season of eligibility with the Cougars next year. Baker is a four-time Canada West medalist – including a gold in the 60-metre hurdles back in February – and also won a CIS bronze medal last season. Also on the team is
Jeremy Eckert, who was named the Canada West and CIS Rookie of the Year last season after winning a gold medal in the high jump.
Les Andersen, a four-year veteran with the Cougars, is expected to compete in the 400-metre hurdles and the triple jump at the Games.
Kelly Wiebe, who was the U of R’s cross country team’s top runner last season, will represent Saskatchewan in the 1500-metre run and the 5000-metre run.
Eric Clark is expected to run the 200-metre dash and in the relays.
Chelsea Valois, who jumped an impressive 5.69 metres in the long jump at the team trials over the weekend, and
Amanda Ruller, who won the 100-metre and 200-metre dashes, headline the list of athletes from the U of R’s women’s team. Valois has earned eight conference medals and one CIS medal over her three-season career with the Cougars, while Ruller is the school’s record holder in the 60-metre dash. Triple jumper

Caitlin Fowler will also represent the province at the Summer Games.
Middle distance runner Wyatt Baiton, jumper Brett Galloway, and sprinter Craig White will also compete with Saskatchewan at the Games and will join the U of R’s men’s track & field team for the 2009-10 season. Jumper Shalane Haselhan is expected to compete in both the long jump and the triple jump at the Summer Games and will compete for the Cougar women’s team next year.
“I’m extremely impressed by all of the great performances by our athletes over the weekend,” Cougar track & field head coach
Bruce McCannel said. “We also had a couple athletes who just missed out on making the team and I saw some great potential from our incoming recruits.”
The 2009 Canada Summer Games will be held in Prince Edward Island from August 15 through August 29.
