University of Regina men’s hockey head coach Blaine Sautner announced Monday that former Red Deer Rebels centre Carter Smith has committed to the University of Regina.
Smith, listed at 6’1” and 188 lbs., scored 20 goals and added 18 assists for 38 points in 62 games last year as a 20-year-old with Red Deer. Over his 237-game WHL career with Red Deer, Everett, and Moose Jaw, Smith amassed 38 goals, 30 assists, 68 points, and 255 penalty minutes.
He was with Moose Jaw during the Warriors’ run to the 2006 WHL final, appearing in all 22 of the team’s postseason games and registering two assists.
“Carter had a great season last year in Red Deer,” Sautner said. “He’ll immediately bring some offensive depth and he also gives us some size up the middle, which we need. He came into his own this year with the Rebels and we’re hoping he’ll continue to develop with us.”
Smith, who hails from Eyebrow, Sask., also spent parts of the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with the Yorkton Terriers, averaging just under a point per game during his time in the SJHL.
Smith is the first member of the U of R’s 2009-10 recruiting class.
