University of Regina women's basketball head coach Dave Taylor announced Friday that Mount Royal College’s Vanessa Wesolowski has committed to the Cougars and will join the team for the 2009-10 season.

Wesolowski, an Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference first-team all-star last season, finished second among all South Division players with an average of 13.9 points per game during the regular season and added 5.3 rebounds per game. The 6’2” forward also led the South Division with 85 free throws made during the 20-game conference schedule.

She was even better in the playoffs with the Cougars, averaging 24.5 points per game in Mount Royal’s two postseason contests against King’s University College.

“We’re very excited Vanessa chose to commit to the Cougars,” Taylor said. “She comes out of a strong Mount Royal program and was well coached by Joe Enevoldson there. She’s exactly what we need going into next year – she gives us a big, athletic body up front and is ready to step in and play in Canada West immediately.”

After starring for the Chestermere (Alta.) High School Lakers, Wesolowski enrolled at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. She played in just six games for the Grizzlies during the 2007-08 season and was granted a medical redshirt by the NCAA. Wesolowski, who plans to major in geology at the U of R, will have four seasons of CIS eligibility with the Cougars.

Wesolowski is the fourth member of Taylor’s 2009 recruiting class.
