Two University of Regina women’s wrestlers are gaining international experience over the next two weekends, as both
Lisa McKibben (pictured, left) and
Jasmine Slinn (right) are currently preparing for tournaments in Romania and Germany.
This weekend, the pair will be in action on Saturday and Sunday at the International Tournament for Juniors in Resita, Romania, which will feature wrestlers from 19 of the top European countries. McKibben’s 67-kilogram class weighed in on Friday and will wrestle Saturday, while Slinn will wrestle at 48 kg on Sunday. Both Cougars will also wrestle at the Grand Prix of Germany, which is scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday (May 30 and 31) in Dormagen, Germany.
For McKibben and Slinn, who will both enter their second seasons of CIS eligibility next year, these two competitions will serve as a warmup to the World Junior Championship in Turkey in August. The pair qualified for the junior worlds back in March by winning their respective weight classes at the Canadian Junior National Championship in Regina.
U of R assistant coach
Dan McGee will accompany McKibben and Slinn in Romania and Germany over the next eight days, and will also make the trip to Turkey in August. McGee’s trip was made possible through the work of SaskSport’s High Performance Committee and was supported by Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association president Clive Llewellyn.
“The European tournaments will be a great experience for both Lisa and Jasmine,” Cougar head coach
Leo McGee said. “And the opportunity to have our coach involved was perfect.”
The wrestlers will return to Regina on June 1 following the Dormagen competition.
