Valois wins CIS silver medal in pentathlon

Chelsea Valois’ second-place finish in the pentathlon highlighted the performance of the University of Regina’s track & field teams on Day 1 of the 2009 CIS Championships in Windsor, Ont.

Valois finished with 3621 points, just 66 behind Western Ontario’s Jen Cotton for first place. Her top event was the high jump, which she won after clearing the bar at 1.62 metres. Valois also finished in second place in both the shot put (10.40m) and the long jump (5.47m), helping her win her first medal at the CIS championships and score eight team points for the Cougars.

Amanda Ruller barely failed to qualify for the finals in the 60-metre dash, but her time of 7.73 seconds was the eighth fastest in the preliminaries and scored a single team point for the U of R.

Les Andersen was the only member of the U of R’s men’s team competing on Thursday. He finished in 12th place in the pentathlon with 2360 points, as he withdrew from the 1000-metre run.
