Linda Duarte and
Andrew Malawski represented the University of Regina’s swimming teams at the 2009 CIS Championships over the weekend in Vancouver, with Duarte’s fifth-place finish in the 200-metre butterfly highlighting the duo’s performance.
Duarte qualified for the ‘A’ final by posting a time of 2:18.32, the sixth-best time in the preliminaries. She moved up to fifth place in the finals after finishing the event in a career-best time of 2:16.69, which also stands as a U of R school record.
Duarte also qualified for the ‘B’ final in both the 50-metre butterfly and the 100-metre butterfly. She placed 10th in the 100 fly (1:03.33) after setting a school record with a time of 1:02.9 in the preliminaries, and also finished in 12th place in the 50 fly (28.92 s).
Making his final appearance as a Cougar, Malawski’s highlight was in the 50-metre breaststroke, where he recorded a time of 29.60 seconds in the preliminaries to hit the senior national standard and qualify for the ‘B’ final in the event. Malawski swam 29.84 seconds in the final, ending up in 16th place in the event.
Malawski also swam in the preliminaries in the 50-metre backstroke (28.27 s), 50-metre butterfly (26.48 s), and the 50-metre freestyle (23.87). He will graduate this spring with a Bachelor of Science with a major in biochemistry.
Duarte scored a total of 26 points for the Cougars, putting the U of R in 17th place in the team standings. Malawski’s point in the 50 breast put the Cougar men’s team in 21st place.
