Led by the Malloy brothers, the University of Regina’s men’s wrestling team was ranked No. 3 in the CIS rankings released in late November.
Second-year grappler
Connor Malloy - last season’s Canada West Male Rookie of the Year and a conference gold medalist at 76 kilograms – is ranked No. 2 in the country at 76 kg, while his younger brother
Gaelan Malloy is ranked No. 2 at 68 kilograms.
With 38 points in the rankings, the Cougars trail only Simon Fraser (81 points) and Lakehead (49). Regina is five points ahead of New Brunswick and Saskatchewan, who tied for fourth place in the poll with 33 points.
Kirk Ackerman is ranked No. 3 at 61 kilograms, while
Chad Bates (4th, 65 kg),
Steven Schneider (5th, 57 kg), and
Jimmy Levesque (5th, 90 kg) are also ranked in the top five in the CIS in their weight classes.
The Cougars will return to the mat on Jan. 2 at the Jamestown Open in Jamestown, N.D. The team will host the Cougar Invitational on Jan. 16 and will also play host to Jamestown College in a dual featuring both the men’s and the women’s teams on Jan. 20.
