The University of Regina’s men’s and women’s wrestling teams both finished in first place in the team standings at Saturday’s Huskie Open in Saskatoon.
The men’s team, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the CIS by Wrestling Canada, finished with 61 team points and an 11-point cushion over second-place Saskatchewan. The Cougars had two individual champions, as
John Pauliuk won the 50 kg division and
Steven Schneider took first place at 57 kg.
Four Cougars won silver medals, including
Kirk Ackerman (61 kg),
Chad Bates (65 kg),
Gaelan Malloy (68 kg), and
Connor Malloy (76 kg).
Justin Lamb (54 kg),
Jesse Loffler (68 kg), and
Jarret Coels (72 kg) all finished in third place in their weight classes.
The U of R’s women’s team finished with 34 team points, edging Calgary by just one point to take first place.
Annie Quangtakoune (44 kg) and
Hajar Ashtiani (48 kg) both placed first for the Cougars, while
Jasmine Slinn (51 kg) and
Meghan King (59 kg) won silver medals.
Lisa McKibben had a third-place finish at 67 kg for the Cougars, who are also ranked No. 3 in the CIS.
The men’s team will enjoy a month off before returning to action at the Jamestown Open on Jan. 2. Both the men’s and women’s teams will travel to Edmonton for the Golden Bear Invitational on Jan. 9.
