The University of Regina’s women’s basketball team trailed Alberta by as many as 19 points in the second quarter, but the Cougars had a huge second half and recorded an 80-68 win over the Pandas on Saturday night in a Canada West game in Edmonton.

The Pandas were simply dominant in the first half. Emily Bolduc hit a three-pointer to give Alberta a 46-27 lead with just under two minutes left, but the Cougars cut the lead down to 14 by halftime.

Regina (5-1) outscored Alberta 25-14 in the third quarter to get within striking distance of the Pandas, then limited Alberta to just five points in the fourth to secure the victory.

Brittany Read piled up 28 points for the Cougars, shattering her previous career high of 20. The third-year post was 9-for-14 from the field, 10-for-12 from the charity stripe, and also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Joanna Zalesiak had 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Cougars, while Lindsay Ledingham came off the bench to score 12 points in 31 minutes on the floor.

Nicole Clarke led the Pandas with 16 points.

The Cougars will be back in action next weekend at the CKHS, as they’ll host Fraser Valley (0-4) on Friday and Thompson Rivers (2-4) on Saturday.

NOTES: Read’s previous career high was 20 points, set in a 71-62 win at Winnipeg on Jan. 23, 2009.
