Cougars hold off Pandas for 68-64 win

The University of Regina’s women’s basketball team is now 4-1 on the season after recording a 68-64 win over the Alberta Pandas on Friday night in Edmonton.

Alberta never held the lead during the contest, though the Pandas never trailed by more than eight points in the final quarter. A jumper by Alysia Rissling drew Alberta to within two with three minutes left in the fourth, but Regina’s defence clamped down to hold the Pandas off down the stretch.

Joanna Zalesiak led Regina with 14 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Brittany Read had 12 points, while Rebecca Schmidt came off the bench to score 11.

Marisa Haylett scored a game-high 15 points for Alberta.

The teams will play again on Saturday night in Edmonton.
