Cougars hold off Golden Bears for road victory

The University of Regina’s men’s basketball team improved to 2-3 on Friday night after defeating the Alberta Golden Bears by a 62-61 margin in a Canada West game that featured 17 lead changes and 12 ties.

Jamal Williams scored the final bucket of the game, putting the Cougars up by one with 41 seconds remaining on the clock. Regina’s defence forced three missed shots and three turnovers following Williams’ basket, giving the Cougars the win.

Williams led the Cougars with 13 points and added ten rebounds. Kris Heshka also had a double-double for the Cougars, scoring 12 and grabbing 11 boards. Paul Schubach also broke into double digits in scoring, collecting 11 points in the win.

Jordan Baker and Sahr Saffa both scored 18 for Alberta as the Golden Bears drop to 4-3 on the season.

Alberta and Regina will play again on Saturday night.

NOTES: Williams needs just 17 points to become the 12th player in U of R history to score 1000 career points in conference games.
