The University of Regina’s women’s hockey team closes out its six-game homestand this weekend with a pair of games against Calgary on Friday and Saturday (7 p.m.) at the Sherwood Ice Sports Centre.

Last weekend in Emerald Park, the Cougars took the No. 4-ranked Manitoba Bisons to a shootout on both Saturday and Sunday, but lost both of them to end up with a two-point weekend.

Angele Richmond and Kelcie McCutcheon scored on Saturday for the Cougars, who lost 3-2 following a six-round shootout. Gina Campbell scored Regina’s lone goal during Sunday’s 2-1 loss as the Bisons took their second shootout win in as many days. Lisa Urban stopped 27 shots in regulation on Saturday, added 25 more on Sunday, and stopped six of Manitoba’s nine shootout attempts.

The two overtime losses moved Regina’s record to 1-4-3 on the season. With five points, the Cougars are just two behind fourth-place UBC (3-6-1) and one behind fifth-place Lethbridge (3-5-0) in the Canada West standings.

Calgary is in its first season back at the Canada West level following seven years in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. The Dinos were in Canada West from 1997-98 through 2001-02 before moving to the ACAC. After opening the season with a win in its first game back in Canada West, Calgary has suffered seven consecutive losses and sits in seventh place with a 1-7-0 record. Fifth-year forward Danielle Boyce leads the Dinos with six points in eight games, while second-year forward Elana Lovell has a team-leading four goals.

Given Calgary’s extensive history in the ACAC, the two teams have only played three conference games against each other. The Cougars hold a 2-1 advantage in those contests.

Both teams will wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule next weekend. Calgary will host Canada West-leading Alberta at the Olympic Oval, while the Cougars will hit the road for the first time in well over a month to take on the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
