Kelly Wiebe was named the Canada West Male Athlete of the Week on Monday after leading the University of Regina’s men’s cross country team to its first conference title at the CIS Championships on Saturday afternoon.

Wiebe was the first Cougar across the line on Saturday, finishing the ten-kilometre Fort Henry Hill course in a time of 30:49 to place third overall.

Wiebe was named a first-team All-Canadian, the Canada West Male Athlete of the Year, and a conference first-team all-star for his performance at the race, the second national meet of his CIS career. He knocked three minutes and 32 seconds off his time from the 2007 CIS Championships, when he finished in 52nd place while running as an individual.

Wyatt Baiton, Eric Benjamin, Iain Fyfe, Wiebe, and Dale Wig made up the U of R’s Canada West championship-winning team on Saturday.

Wiebe is the first U of R male athlete to win the weekly conference award this season. He is an automatic nominee for the Blackberry CIS Male Athlete of the Week, which will be announced on Wednesday.
