Powered by a third-place finish by third-year runner Kelly Wiebe, the University of Regina’s men’s cross country team won the Canada West title on Saturday afternoon at the CIS Championships at Fort Henry Hill in Kingston.

The Cougars, who entered the weekend ranked No. 4 in the CIS, finished just ahead of Calgary and Alberta to win the school’s first Canada West cross country championship. Regina placed fourth overall in the team standings behind Guelph, Windsor, and St. Francis Xavier.

“The guys were absolutely awesome,” U of R cross country and track & field head coach Bruce McCannel said. “They took a team mentality to the meet and they battled hard today.”

Wiebe was the first Canada West runner across the line, finishing in third place with a time of 30:49 on the ten-kilometre course. Wyatt Baiton was next for the Cougars, placing 13th overall – and first among all rookies – with a time of 31:58.

Dale Wig finished in 21st place with a time of 32:25, while Iain Fyfe’s time of 32:46 put the second-year runner in 30th place. Eric Benjamin battled through a foot injury but managed to finish in 119th place with a time of 35:52.

“What was most impressive about today was Eric’s performance,” McCannel said. “He was pretty much running on one foot for half of the race. It would have been easy for him to pack it in and no one would have blamed him, but he stepped up to the plate and pushed through it.”

Wiebe earned first-team All-Canadian status, while Baiton is a second-team All-Canadian, the Canada West Rookie of the Year, and the CIS Rookie of the Year. Wig joined Wiebe and Baiton as Canada West first-team all-stars, while Fyfe was a second-team all-star. Cross country coach Graeme McMaster, who has overseen the team’s training and accompanied the squad to Kingston, was named the Canada West Coach of the Year.

The Cougars also took two members of the women’s team to run as individuals. Melissa Petersen finished in 77th place with a time of 19:14, while Karissa LePage finished 78th just one second behind Petersen.
