Cougars down Thompson Rivers; end tournament with 2-1 record

The University of Regina’s men’s basketball team scored a 76-63 non-conference win over Thompson Rivers on Saturday night in its final game at the Graham Construction Shootout in Saskatoon.

Regina led by seven at the half and extended that lead to 17 after three quarters. The Cougars led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 13-point victory to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record.

Marek Downarowicz was 8-for-12 from the field and scored a game-high 18 points, while Jamal Williams pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and scored 13 points. Paul Schubach (14) and Kris Heshka also broke into double figures in points for the Cougars.

Sean Garvey was 4-for-9 from downtown and led Thompson Rivers with 14 points in 31 minutes on the floor.

The win improves the Cougars’ non-conference record to 5-1. They will travel for a game against Minot State next Friday before beginning the Canada West schedule the following weekend with a pair of games at Lethbridge.
