The University of Regina’s men’s basketball team was handed its first loss of the non-conference schedule on Friday night after falling 90-82 to the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.

The Cougars led 82-81 with just over a minute left, but fifth-year guard Paul Schubach was called for an intentional foul. Saskatchewan’s Showron Glover drained the ensuing free throws, and the Huskies scored all of the game’s nine final points to seal the win.

Glover was 6-for-11 from three-point land and ended up leading all players with 33 points and 11 steals. Michael Linklater piled in 20 points and added six steals for the Huskies.

Jamal Williams scored 22 points and pulled down ten rebounds to record a double-double for the Cougars. Jordan McFarlen (15), Kris Heshka (12), Marek Downarowicz (11), and Paul Schubach (11) also scored in double figures for the Cougars, who were missing shooting guard Jeff Lukomski due to his commitments with the football team.

The loss drops the Cougars’ non-conference record to 4-1. Regina also falls to 1-1 in the Graham Construction Shootout, a four-team tournament hosted by the University of Saskatchewan. The Cougars finish off the weekend with a game against Thompson Rivers on Saturday night.
