The University of Regina’s men’s cross country team swept the top four positions and had runners in five of the top six spots on Friday afternoon at the Minot State Open in Minot, N.D.
For the fourth consecutive meet,
Wyatt Baiton was the U of R’s top finisher. Baiton scored his third individual championship of the season, finishing in first place with a time of 25:05 on the eight-kilometre Souris Valley Golf Course track.
Kelly Wiebe returned from his injury and finished just five seconds behind Baiton, as the third-year runner placed second with a time of 25:10.
Dale Wig finished in third place with a time of 26:08, while
Iain Fyfe’s time of 26:16 put him in fourth place.
Eric Benjamin finished in sixth place with a time of 27:10, while
Marc Beaton placed tenth (28:38).
Miguel Potosme also ran for the Cougars, finishing the course in 30:12 to post an 18th-place finish.
The men’s team, currently ranked No. 8 in the CIS, finished in first place ahead of Minot State and Jamestown College in the team standings.
The U of R’s women’s team also sent two runners to Minot, with both finishing in the top four. First-year runner
Karissa LePage placed second with a time of 18:57 on the 5K course, while
Melissa Petersen finished in fourth place (19:25).
The U of R’s cross country teams will have a weekend off before travelling to Edmonton to run in the Stewart Cup on Oct. 31.
