Linda Duarte scored the top finish for the University of Regina’s swimming team on Day 2 of the 2009 Canada West Championships in Saanich, B.C. after placing fifth in the 100-metre butterfly.
Duarte swam the 100 fly in 1:04.78 in the preliminaries, then recorded a time of 1:04.01 in the finals. Her fifth-place finish scored 14 team points for the Cougars. Duarte also scored a team point in the 200-metre freestyle, as she placed 16th with a time of 2:16.97.
Mya Demchuk scored six team points for the Cougars in the 100-meter butterfly, finishing in 11th place with a time of 1:05.91. She also swam in the 100-metre breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:21.04.
Maggi Pettit placed 12th in the 50-metre freestyle (27.69 s) to score five points for the Cougars, and also finished the 200 free in a time of 2:18.77.
Andrew Malawski had a fantastic swim in the ‘B’ final of the 50-metre freestyle, winning the race with a CIS qualifying time of 23.95 seconds to place ninth overall and score nine team points in the event. Malawski also scored three points in the 100-metre breaststroke, placing 14th with a time of 1:07.64.
The teams will wrap up the conference meet on Sunday.
