Duarte leads Cougar charge at Fall Olympian

Linda Duarte had three first-place finishes and hit two conference standards to highlight the performance of the University of Regina’s swimming teams at the Regina Marlins Fall Olympian at the Lawson Aquatic Centre over the weekend.

Duarte registered first-place finishes in the 50-metre butterfly (30.72 s), 50-metre breaststroke (38.07 s), and the 50-metre backstroke (32.69) and also placed second in the 200-metre butterfly (2:41.87). Her times in the 50-metre butterfly and the 50-metre backstroke both met the Canada West standard.

Mya Demchuk had a first-place finish in the 200-metre butterfly (2:37.31), while Maggi Pettit’s top races were a second-place finish in the 50-metre freestyle (28.56 s) and a third-place finish in the 200-metre freestyle (2:25.23).

Andrew Malawski won three of the four races he entered and finished second in the other. He hit a new conference standard in the 50-metre butterfly (27.69 s), bettered his old conference standard in the 50-metre freestyle (25.13 s), and also placed first in the 50-metre backstroke (30.36 s).

Hector Fukushi competed in his first meet as a Cougar, and ended up with three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes.

The Cougars will swim next at the Prairie Winter International, scheduled for Dec. 4 to 7 in Winnipeg.
