Cougar cross country wins U of S Open

Powered by top runner Kelly Wiebe, the University of Regina’s men’s cross country team continued its hot start with a first-place finish at the U of S Open on Saturday afternoon at Victoria Park in Saskatoon.

Wiebe finished the eight-kilometre course in first place with a time of 27:05, 15 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Dale Wig placed fourth with a time of 27:46, while Iain Fyfe finished in 10th place with a time of 28:07. Scott Mitchell was right on Fyfe’s heels with a time of 28:09, and Eric Benjamin placed 17th with a time of 28:24.

The Cougar men finished in first place at the event, which featured a field that included Canada West foes Alberta, Calgary, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. The Dinos entered the meet ranked No. 8 in the CIS.

Kaytlyn Criddle was the U of R’s women’s team top finisher, placing 32nd with a five-kilometre time of 20:53. Melissa Petersen finished 34th (20:56) and Portia Barker was 35th (21:02).

The next action for the U of R’s cross country teams will be at the Minot State Open, scheduled for Oct. 17 in Minot, N.D.
