Kelly Wiebe won his fourth race of the season and the No. 8-ranked University of Regina’s men’s cross country team edged the Calgary Dinos for first place on Saturday afternoon at the Stewart Cup.

Wiebe took first place with a time of 32:41 in the ten-kilometre event, which was held at Calgary’s Canmore Park. Iain Fyfe was the next Cougar across the line, as he finished in 10th place with a time of 34:17. Dale Wig (34:28) and Scott Mitchell (34:30) finished in 12th and 13th place, while Eric Benjamin finished in 23rd place with a time of 35:03.

The U of R took the team title by just five points over Calgary, and also defeated fellow Canada West schools Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan at the event. The Cougars have now won four of the five meets that they have entered this season.

Kris Frisk (37:05) finished in 50th place for the Cougars, Miguel Potosme (38:07) placed 62nd, and Marc Beaton (38:34) finished 67th.

Kaytlyn Criddle was the top Cougar finisher on the women’s side, as she finished in 50th place with a time of 21:59 on the five-kilometre course. Melissa Petersen (22:27) placed 58th, Karen Lawson (22:38) was 61st, and Portia Barker (23:09) placed 67th for the Cougars, who didn’t field enough runners to place in the team standings.

The Cougars will now prepare for the CIS Championships, scheduled for Nov. 8 in Laval, Que.
